An Abuja High Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of a 32-year-old man, Israel Friday, in a correctional facility over allegations of stabbing his neighbour during a dispute.
The defendant is facing a charge of attempted culpable homicide.
Presiding judge, M. S. Idris, issued the remand order after the prosecution, led by Donatus Abah, argued that granting bail could endanger the victim.
Following submissions from both parties, the court adjourned proceedings until May 13 to rule on the bail application and commence trial.
The prosecution told the court that the incident occurred in the Angwan Tiv area of Zone 7, Lugbe, where the defendant allegedly stabbed his neighbour, Theophilus Edache, during an altercation.
According to Abah, the attack resulted in severe injuries, leading to the amputation of the victim’s left hand.
He added that the alleged offence contravenes Sections 229(1) and 248 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Counsel to the defendant, Noah Abdul, urged the court to grant bail, arguing that the offence was not capital in nature and therefore bailable.
But the prosecution opposed the request, maintaining that the defendant posed a serious threat to the victim’s life if released.
Abah further told the court that the victim’s condition had left him vulnerable, insisting that the safety concerns justified the denial of bail.
The matter was subsequently adjourned for ruling.
