Several commuters and motorists narrowly escaped death on Tuesday after a speeding truck conveying sachet water overturned at the Toll Gate section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The accident, which occurred around 4:45 pm, caused panic among road users as the vehicle reportedly lost control and spilled its contents across the busy highway.
The Commander of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Ota Unit, Salau Hammed, confirmed the incident, attributing the crash to excessive speeding.
According to him, the truck was heading from the Ilo-Awela area towards the Toll Gate when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn on the expressway.
Despite the severity of the accident, Hammed said no life was lost and no injury was recorded.
“We thank God that no life was lost and nobody sustained injuries in the accident,” he stated.
The TRACE commander warned motorists against reckless driving and urged vehicle owners to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles before embarking on journeys.
He also cautioned commercial motorcyclists and roadside traders operating along highways to avoid activities capable of endangering lives.
Hammed further advised commercial bus drivers against indiscriminate parking and picking up passengers on highways, noting that such actions could lead to collisions with articulated vehicles.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and other major roads to reduce road accidents.
Officials of TRACE and other emergency responders were later deployed to the scene to evacuate the overturned truck and restore free flow of traffic on the route.
