The management of Gombe State University has commenced an investigation following the discovery of a day-old baby boy inside one of the institution’s female hostels.
The university confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, Napthali Hadu, describing the development as disturbing and contrary to the institution’s regulations.
According to the statement, the newborn was found on Friday within the female hostel premises, prompting the school authorities to immediately begin an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Hadu assured members of the public that efforts were ongoing to identify those connected to the matter, adding that appropriate action would be taken once investigations were concluded.
He described the situation as unfortunate and noted that it represented a serious violation of the rules guiding students’ conduct within the university community.
“I also heard about the unfortunate incident today at school. I will get back to you as soon as I gather more details,” he said.
The university spokesman disclosed that the baby had been taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
As part of measures to aid the investigation, the management was said to have placed restrictions on movement within the female hostel.
The institution, however, urged members of the public to remain calm while the investigation continues.
