The Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State, has cautioned Nigerians against fraudulent social media accounts impersonating its Principal and Chief Executive, Engr. Dr. Samuel Onoji.

In a public notice released by the institution’s management, the institute disclosed that some cybercriminals had created fake accounts on Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn using the identity and photographs of the PTI helmsman to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

The management condemned the act, describing it as a deliberate attempt by fraudsters to exploit the reputation of the institution for criminal purposes.

According to the statement, the fake accounts are allegedly being used to demand money from individuals under the pretext of securing admissions, employment opportunities, contracts and other favours purportedly connected to PTI.

The institution also alleged that the impersonators request sensitive financial and personal details from students, contractors, staff members and other stakeholders while circulating false information attributed to the office of the Principal and Chief Executive.

PTI clarified that Engr. Dr. Onoji does not use any personal social media account for official dealings relating to the institute and has not authorised anyone to act on his behalf through unofficial online platforms.

“The Principal/Chief Executive does not solicit funds, gifts, or confidential information from members of the public through social media,” the statement added.

The institute urged the public to depend solely on PTI’s verified communication channels, including its official website, recognised social media handles and approved email addresses for authentic information concerning the institution.

It warned Nigerians against responding to suspicious messages, friend requests or online interactions from individuals claiming to represent the PTI management, noting that such engagements could expose victims to fraud and identity theft.

The management further appealed to media organisations and stakeholders to help spread awareness about the development in order to curb the activities of the impersonators.

While expressing concern over the increasing rate of cyber impersonation, PTI reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the institution and ensuring that members of the public are not deceived by criminal elements operating online.

The institute advised anyone seeking clarification or official information about PTI to contact its Public Affairs Department through its recognised communication platforms.
