A man, Waidi, has asked a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Khalifa, alleging that her attitude and conduct have made the union unbearable.
The petitioner told the court that his wife was stubborn, disrespectful and constantly challenged his authority at home, adding that she rarely admitted wrongdoing or apologised for her actions.
Waidi further accused Khalifa of frequently engaging him in quarrels and treating members of his family with contempt whenever they visited.
According to him, repeated disagreements and what he described as her refusal to submit to his leadership in the home had left him frustrated and unwilling to continue with the marriage.
Addressing the court, Waidi said he and Khalifa were married under Islamic rites and that he fulfilled all customary obligations, including the payment of her bride price.
He alleged that problems began after she moved into his residence, claiming she often insisted on having things done her own way and disregarded his instructions.
“My wife hardly acknowledges her mistakes and finds it difficult to apologise. She quarrels with me regularly and has made the marriage difficult to sustain,” he told the court.
The petitioner also claimed that Khalifa had a strained relationship with his relatives and often insulted them whenever they came around.
He urged the court to terminate the marriage, stating that he no longer found happiness in the relationship.
Khalifa, however, did not oppose the request for the dissolution of the union.
Following the proceedings, the President of the court, Mrs O. E. Owoseni, adjourned the matter until June 20 for the defendant’s defence.
