A commercial driver lost his life on Tuesday following a multi-vehicle collision along the busy Lagos-Apapa Expressway.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, who disclosed that the crash involved a commercial minibus and a Toyota Tundra.

According to him, preliminary findings indicated that the minibus driver sustained severe injuries from the impact of the collision and died at the scene.

Taofiq said LASTMA officials on routine patrol swiftly responded to the accident, securing the area, coordinating emergency operations and managing traffic to minimise disruption along the heavily used corridor.

He added that the remains of the deceased were released to family members at the scene.

The spokesperson further disclosed that the damaged vehicles were evacuated from the roadway to restore the free flow of traffic and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

He said the police would conduct a detailed inquiry to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the crash, establish liability and facilitate any necessary legal action.

Despite the temporary traffic disruption caused by the accident, Taofiq noted that the prompt intervention of LASTMA officials ensured that normal vehicular movement was restored within a short period.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathised with the family of the deceased and urged motorists to observe traffic regulations and drive responsibly.

He particularly advised commercial drivers to exercise caution on the roads and remain vigilant at all times to prevent avoidable accidents.

The incident adds to the growing concerns over road safety on major highways across Lagos, where authorities have continued to advocate stricter adherence to traffic rules to reduce fatalities.
