Three remanded for stealing, selling free mosquito nets

The Osun State Police Command has arraigned and remanded three suspects for allegedly stealing and selling 300 insecticide-treated mosquito nets meant for free distribution under a government health intervention programme.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, who identified the suspects as Rabbi Bennett, Opeyemi Ajibola and Aminu Ibrahim.

According to the police, the suspects have been remanded in a correctional facility following their arraignment before a court.

Ojelabi said the case came to light on June 9, 2026, after authorities received intelligence about the alleged illegal sale of government-owned mosquito nets designated for public distribution.

Preliminary investigations, he said, revealed that Bennett, a native of Delta State and a staff member of the United States Agency for International Development attached to Ife North Local Government Area in Ipetumodu, allegedly became involved in a dispute with Ajibola, a commercial motorcycle rider residing on Ayetoro Street, Ipetumodu, over proceeds from the unlawful sale of the mosquito nets.

Further investigations, according to the police, established that the suspects, in collaboration with Ibrahim, allegedly sold six bundles containing 300 insecticide-treated mosquito nets on June 8, 2026.

The command stated that the mosquito nets were intended to be distributed free of charge to residents as part of a government public health initiative.

Following the discovery, the three suspects were arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Police said the suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement during interrogation.

“The case has since been charged to court, and all suspects have been remanded at the Correctional Centre pending further judicial proceedings,” the statement read.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public resources and ensuring that individuals entrusted with implementing government welfare programmes are held accountable for any abuse of public trust.

The police added that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
