The Australian Government has commenced applications for its 2026 Research Training Programme scholarship, offering fully funded opportunities to Nigerian and other international students seeking to pursue Master’s by Research and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at participating Australian universities.
The Research Training Programme, funded by the Australian Government, provides financial support for eligible postgraduate research students through accredited universities across the country.
The scholarship covers full tuition fees, annual living expenses and other research-related costs.
According to information published by Australia’s Department of Education, applications are not submitted through a central government portal, as each participating university is responsible for its own admission and scholarship selection process.
The programme is open to both domestic and international applicants, including Nigerians, provided they satisfy the admission requirements and English language proficiency standards of their chosen institutions.
Introduced in 2017, the Research Training Programme replaced the Australian Postgraduate Award, the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship and the Research Training Scheme.
It is designed to strengthen research capacity while producing graduates equipped for careers in academia, industry and other professional sectors.
Successful applicants are entitled to full tuition coverage, a living stipend and additional allowances to offset expenses associated with postgraduate research.
For the 2026 academic session, the base annual stipend for full-time beneficiaries is valued at AUD34,315, although some universities may provide higher financial support depending on available funding.
The scholarship is tenable for up to two years for Master’s by Research candidates and a maximum of four years for full-time PhD students.
Application deadlines differ among participating universities. While some institutions will close applications between July and October 2026 for early 2027 admission, others operate multiple admission cycles throughout the year.
Prospective applicants are advised to identify universities that align with their research interests and prepare the required documents, including a research proposal, curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, referee reports and proof of English language proficiency before applying through the graduate research portal of their preferred institution.
The Department of Education also urged applicants to contact their preferred universities directly for institution-specific eligibility requirements, application procedures and deadlines, stressing that there is no single application portal for the scholarship.
The scholarship remains highly competitive, with applicants expected to present outstanding academic records, strong research proposals and favourable recommendation letters. Many participating universities also provide additional benefits such as Overseas Student Health Cover, relocation assistance and paid leave during the period of study.
There is no specified age limit for applicants, although candidates are expected to demonstrate strong research potential. Most universities also require proof of English proficiency through recognised examinations such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE.
