A police inspector with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, Dr. Ikechukwu Obodo, has died after he was reportedly struck by a hit-and-run driver in Enugu State.
The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing the officer’s death as a tragic loss.
Until his death, Obodo, a native of Nkpologu community in Enugu State, was attached to the Operations Department at the State Police Command Headquarters.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that the officer was killed by a police convoy.
Ndukwe clarified that preliminary findings showed no evidence linking the fatal accident to any police convoy, stressing that investigations into the incident were still ongoing.
Although the command did not disclose the exact location or time of the crash, it assured residents that efforts were underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“The loss of a police officer or any individual in such circumstances is deeply regrettable and deserves a thorough investigation.
At this stage, there is no evidence to support claims that a police convoy was responsible for the fatal hit-and-run accident,” the police spokesperson stated.
He added that the command would make additional information available as investigations progress.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing driver responsible for the crash, while the remains of the late police inspector have been deposited in a mortuary pending the conclusion of investigations.
