Ramadan: KEDCO pledges stable power supply in Kano, Katsina, Jigawa

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has assured customers in Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States of a stable power supply during Ramadan.

KEDCO’s managing director, Yusuf Abubakar, made the promise during a town-hall meeting with customers and stakeholders in Katsina on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on ‘customer rights, obligations and other salient operational issues’.

Mr Abubakar, represented by KEDCO’s regional head, Nasiru Dembo, stressed that a stable power supply relies on customers fulfilling their responsibilities.

He added that management is engaging stakeholders in Abuja to ensure power stability during Ramadan.

Mr Abubakar urged customers to pay their monthly bills to allow KEDCO to meet its obligations to the electricity suppliers.

He emphasised that non-payment of electricity bills is a major challenge hindering KEDCO’s progress.

“The purpose of the meeting was to encourage bill payment and improve power supply in the community,” he explained.

According to him, KEDCO is losing over N250 million every month in the Katsina North region alone, operating at a loss.

The company is also dealing with vandalism, especially to transformers, cables, and transformer oil.

Mr Abubakar appealed to the public to help protect these assets, as security alone cannot safeguard them.

He noted that when a transformer is vandalised, replacing it may take time, leaving the area without power.

Other challenges include power shortages during fasting, particularly during hot weather when demand rises.

“The amount of power we receive is distributed to meet customer needs across the areas,” Mr Abubakar said.

The MD also advised customers to switch off lights during the day to save energy and money.

KEDCO’s head of corporate communications, Sani Bala, stated that the meeting aimed to listen to customer concerns and suggestions.

He assured customers that KEDCO would continue holding similar meetings and intensify its corporate social responsibility efforts.

According to him, KEDCO issues monthly bills totalling N12 billion across the three states, but often collects less than N6 billion.
