Authorities in Anambra State have launched an investigation following the fatal shooting of a woman by a member of the local security outfit, Agunechemba.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at the busy Ibeto Junction in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses said the shooting happened as Agunechemba operatives attempted to navigate through heavy traffic.
In an effort to clear the way for their convoy, members of the outfit reportedly fired shots into the air.
A stray bullet struck a passerby, later identified as Chiamaka Okeke, who collapsed on the spot.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
This marks the second such incident involving Agunechemba personnel in recent months.
In March, a similar case was reported in the Mgbakwu community, Awka North LGA, where another woman was allegedly killed by operatives of the same group.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the Nnewi shooting on Wednesday.
He stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has called for calm while assuring the public that efforts are underway to identify the officer responsible.
“We have escalated the matter to the leadership of Agunechemba to assist in identifying the patrol vehicles and the personnel present during the incident,” Ikenga said.
“The Command is committed to ensuring that the suspect is brought to justice.”
Investigations are ongoing, and the police have pledged to provide updates as new information emerges.
