Students of Unity Model School in Asaba, Delta State, were reportedly forced to write one of their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers under poor lighting conditions late in the evening, using torchlights due to a lack of electricity.
A video circulating online shows students sitting for the exam in near darkness.
The video, recorded by an unidentified woman, captures her criticizing the situation and expressing concern over the students’ welfare.
According to her account, the exam was originally scheduled for 2 p.m. but was delayed until around 6 p.m., by which time it was already dark.
With no power supply in the school, torchlights had to be set up inside the classroom to allow the exam to proceed.
“This is not okay,” the woman is heard saying in the video. She also reflected on her own experience as a student, noting that even when lanterns were common, students were not subjected to such poor conditions.
The incident has sparked discussions online, raising questions about exam coordination and infrastructure in public schools.
