Residents of Umunobo, Nkwu-Emeke, and Akalovu communities in Emekuku, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, have expressed concern over the presence of masked herdsmen reportedly carrying firearms near their farmlands.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro on Thursday, a local resident, who requested anonymity, said that around eight masked men believed to be herdsmen were seen on Wednesday morning advancing from the surrounding bushes into the village.

The individuals were allegedly armed with AK-47 rifles, sparking fear and panic among the villagers.

According to the resident, the community had previously clashed with herders over the destruction of crops by their cattle.

Although the herders had dispersed following the initial disagreement, their reappearance in such a manner raised fresh concerns.

In response, the Imo State Police Command confirmed it was aware of the development.

Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had immediately dispatched divisional police officers from Owerri Urban, New Owerri, and Owerri North, along with members of the Special Intervention Squad, to the area.

Okoye assured residents that the situation was under control, adding that the police were working in collaboration with Nigerian Army personnel to maintain security.

“There is no cause for alarm as the situation is under control. We have an adequate security presence.

We appeal to the people to go about their lawful business, as their safety is guaranteed,” he said.
