One month after Buhari’s death, domestic workers recall life with former President

One month after the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, his domestic staff in Daura, Katsina State, say his absence continues to leave a deep void in their lives.

Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, at a London hospital aged 82, was buried in his hometown the following day.

Known for his humility and personal connection with those around him, staff described him as more than an employer.

“Our late boss was a guardian and close friend to us and our families,” one worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The PUNCH. “This past month has shown a cool world of emptiness around here.”

Another recalled his habit of attending workers’ personal events, including condolences and naming ceremonies, staying for hours to offer comfort and prayers. “We have lost a friend, mentor, and employer. His presence brought us pride,” the staff member said.

A visit to Buhari’s residence on Wednesday revealed a well-tended gravesite within the compound, draped in green and white — the colours of the Nigerian flag.

The heavy security presence seen after his burial has since eased, and the streets around the house have returned to normal.

A family source disclosed that preparations were underway for Buhari’s 40-day prayer ceremony, expected to draw a large crowd back to Daura. “After Baba’s burial and the relocation of his family to Kaduna, the area has been quiet.

In the next 10 days, the family will return for the prayers,” the source said.

Neighbours also paid tribute to Buhari. Mohammed Ibrahim described him as “a well-cultured, humble, and disciplined individual” who valued punctuality, upheld daily prayers, and treated everyone with respect.

Residents say his passing has left a reminder of life’s brevity and of the personal qualities that earned him admiration in Daura and beyond.
