A flash flood has killed one person and displaced hundreds of residents in Kebbi State, following heavy downpours that swept through Dandi and Suru Local Government Areas.

The disaster, which struck on Thursday, washed away two major bridges—one in Fana township and another along the Dakingari–Kyangakwai road—cutting off access routes and submerging several homes and farmlands.

Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, led a government delegation to the affected communities on Saturday to commiserate with the victims and deliver relief materials.

During visits to villages in Dandi, Suru, and Argungu LGAs, including Fana, Aljannare, Kampani, Maigwaza, and Tungar Beddi, Tafida announced the distribution of financial aid and food items worth ₦70 million.

Beneficiaries received 1,100 bags of rice alongside cash assistance.

The breakdown of relief support includes: ₦50 million and 600 bags of rice for Dandi LGA; ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice for Suru LGA; and ₦10 million with 250 bags of rice for Kampani village in Argungu LGA.

Tafida assured residents that the state government would commence reconstruction of the collapsed bridges and restore other damaged infrastructure. He also advised communities in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds.

“While we sympathize with the victims, safety must remain a priority.

The government stands with you and will support your recovery process,” he said, offering prayers for divine protection against future disasters.

Confirming the casualty figure, Chairman of Dandi LGA, Dr. Mansur Isah, said one person lost his life while many houses and farms were destroyed. He lauded the government for its swift intervention.

The Chairman of Suru LGA, Muhammad Lawal Suru, and the Member representing Dandi Constituency, Dr. Sulaiman Abubakar, also commended the state’s timely response and pledged support for ongoing relief efforts.

At a separate stop in Kamfani, Argungu LGA, where many displaced persons have taken refuge, the Deputy Governor announced an additional ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice for affected families.

The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, who received the delegation, praised the government’s intervention and pledged the emirate’s continued support for Governor Nasir Idris’s administration.
