The Lagos State Government has rescued a mentally challenged woman accused of disturbing residents in the Agege area of the state, following a viral video that sparked public concern over her behaviour.

The intervention came after a video surfaced online showing a distressed resident appealing to the government to save the neighbourhood from alleged harassment by the woman, said to be living at No. 31 Adedosu Street, Agege.

In the video, the speaker claimed that the woman had been throwing stones into people’s homes and brandishing dangerous objects, including a machete and knife.

“This mentally challenged woman throws stones from one house to another. She carries a machete, knife, and even claims to have a gun.

Please, come and save us from Ibukun Coker — we don’t want to die untimely in this neighbourhood,” the resident cried out in Yoruba.

The video, which quickly went viral across social media platforms, showed the resident lamenting that children could no longer play outside for fear of being attacked.

She also alleged that previous reports to relevant authorities had gone unanswered.

Reacting to the situation on Friday, the state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, confirmed in a post on his verified X handle that officials from the ministry’s Rescue Team had evacuated the woman from the area for medical care and rehabilitation.

“She has been taken to one of our centres for proper care,” Ogunlende said. “I urge the public to continue reporting incidents that require government intervention. We remain committed to ensuring social stability in Lagos.”

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and maintaining peace and order across communities.

The Ministry of Youth and Social Development also encouraged residents to report similar cases through its emergency lines, assuring that no complaint related to public safety or welfare would be ignored
