Police in Ogun State have arrested a woman, Elizabeth Thomson, for allegedly defrauding three unsuspecting victims of N8.5 million under the guise of securing Canadian work visas for them.
Spokesperson of the command, SP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, said the suspect lured her victims with promises of employment opportunities in Canada and presented them with fake visa approval documents.
According to Odutola, the victims narrated that after undergoing biometric verification as directed by the suspect, they were informed that their visas had been approved.
However, when they presented the supposed approval letters at the Visa Facilitation Service (VFS) office in Lagos for verification, they discovered that the documents were forged.
“The victims immediately reported the matter, leading to the arrest of the suspect. Upon interrogation, she confessed to the crime,” Odutola said.
She added that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had been operating a fraudulent migration network targeting job seekers desperate to travel abroad.
Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, warned members of the public to be vigilant and avoid falling prey to visa racketeers.
He assured that discreet investigation was ongoing and that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the probe.
