The Benue office of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu Support Group 2027 and some adjoining structures have been demolished by officials of the state Urban Development Board.
Director-General of the group, Dr. Aker Kpev, told reporters in Makurdi on Thursday that the demolition was carried out without prior notice from the board.
Kpev said the matter has been reported to the relevant authorities, adding that the group awaits an investigation to determine the motive behind the exercise.
He explained that the office, located along the Wurukum–Yaikyor–Apir–Ikpayongo axis of Makurdi, was inaugurated on October 31, noting that the perimeter fence and gate were pulled down by the officials.
But the state government said the exercise was part of the ongoing dualisation of the Makurdi–Enugu Road.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Tersoo Kula, in a statement, said the demolitions were being supervised by relevant government agencies.
According to him, the project extends from Makurdi to the Benue–Enugu boundary, while the Enugu State Government is expected to continue from its end.
Kula explained that affected owners whose structures had proper approvals were compensated, while those who built on government rights of way were duly notified to vacate.
He described attempts to politicise the exercise as mischievous and deceitful, saying some property owners repainted or mounted billboards bearing political leaders’ names to create public sympathy.
“The ongoing demolitions are not acts of victimisation but necessary steps toward infrastructural renewal and modernisation of the state,” Kula said.
He urged residents to support the project, noting that its completion would bring lasting benefits to the people of Benue and Nigeria as a whole.
