NCAA orders air Tanzania to refund stranded passengers

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has directed Air Tanzania to immediately provide accommodation, refunds and other statutory welfare to passengers stranded in Dar es Salaam and Lagos after the airline failed to operate its scheduled flights.

The NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, issued the directive in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Saturday.

Achimugu reminded the airline that under Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023, passengers affected by prolonged delays are entitled to hotel lodging, meals, and consistent updates on the status of their flights.

He disclosed that several Nigerian passengers stuck in Dar es Salaam had raised concerns, including one who must attend a visa interview on Monday and risks missing the appointment.

Achimugu advised the carrier to issue refunds or rebook affected travellers on alternative airlines if it would be unable to operate flights during the weekend.

“While the NCAA is available to support you in any way possible, compliance with the regulations is expected.

We have explained the implications of a technical fault to your passengers, and they understand that safety comes first.

Kindly accord them the courtesies they are entitled to,” he said.

He added that the same level of care must be extended to passengers stranded in Lagos for the outbound flight, noting that the authority is actively engaging travellers in both locations.
