The Lagos State Government has commenced an investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as “Elena,” who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure at a clinic in the state.

The probe is being conducted by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency following reports on social media suggesting that the woman developed complications during or shortly after the cosmetic surgery.

In a statement issued, the Permanent Secretary of the agency, Abiola Idowu, said authorities had begun a comprehensive and transparent inquiry to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

She explained that preliminary findings indicated the clinic where the procedure was reportedly carried out is registered with the regulatory agency.

However, she emphasised that registration does not shield any healthcare facility from scrutiny, particularly in matters involving patient safety.

“As the statutory body responsible for licensing, monitoring and accrediting health facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all healthcare establishments operate in line with approved standards, professional ethics and patient safety guidelines,” Idowu said.

According to her, aesthetic and cosmetic procedures within Lagos State are subject to strict regulatory requirements covering areas such as facility infrastructure, the qualifications of medical practitioners, infection prevention measures, patient consent protocols, anaesthesia safety and emergency response readiness.

She added that the ongoing investigation would involve a detailed assessment of the clinic’s compliance with established regulations, verification of the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved and a review of the medical care provided to the patient before, during and after the procedure.

Idowu reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding public health through robust regulatory oversight, routine monitoring of healthcare facilities and strict enforcement of medical standards across the state.

The agency also appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information that could compromise the integrity of the investigation.
