Two jailed over killing of Nigerian man

A Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has sentenced two men to prison for their involvement in the killing of a Nigerian national, Quham Babatunde, during a violent incident in the Irish capital on February 15, 2025.

The trial judge, Orla Crowe, on Tuesday sentenced Rory Carr, 22, and Bruno Tache, 21, to three years and six months’ imprisonment after both men admitted to charges of violent disorder.

Reports indicated that Babatunde was attacked after fights erupted inside a nightclub, before the violence spilled onto the streets where he was eventually stabbed by another suspect.

According to BreakingNews.ie, the individual alleged to have carried out the stabbing has since been charged with murder and is currently facing trial before a court in Northern Ireland.

The court heard that the unrest began on South Anne Street before spreading to Duke Lane and later Dawson Street, where several individuals were assaulted and sustained bruises during the melee.

During the proceedings, prosecuting counsel John Berry informed the court that Babatunde, a 34-year-old Nigerian, died on the night of the incident, although his death was not directly caused by the actions of the two defendants in the current case.

It was gathered that Carr, who resides at Ard Na Greine on Seapoint Lane in Balbriggan, admitted to three counts of assault causing harm to Babatunde, Adetola Adetuilehim and another individual.

The court was told that Carr delivered about eight punches to Babatunde on South Anne Street after the victim had already sustained the fatal injury. At that moment, the victim was still on his feet but later collapsed.

Detective Superintendent Katharina Joyce also testified that Tache kicked Babatunde in the head while he was lying motionless on the ground.

Tache, whose address was given as Trimleston, Balbriggan, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to the deceased and another victim, in addition to admitting the charge of violent disorder.

While delivering judgment, Judge Crowe observed that although both Carr and Tache participated in the attack, other individuals played more significant roles in inflicting the injuries that led to the victim’s death.

She, however, noted that Carr was heavily involved in the altercation, pointing out that not all the punches he threw at Babatunde actually landed.

The judge further stated that Tache also took an active part in the violence, having been involved in the disturbances that occurred at the three locations where the clashes took place.
