The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits around the vicinity of Akure Airport following a joint security operation by aviation and local security agencies.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday night by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of FAAN, Henry Agbebire.
According to the statement, the suspects were apprehended after a distress alert was received about suspicious persons sighted behind the airport perimeter fence in the direction of the Eleyeowo community.
FAAN explained that security personnel, including its Aviation Security unit, the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force, swiftly launched a coordinated search of the area.
During the operation, some of the individuals reportedly attempted to escape, but four suspects were eventually captured by the joint security team.
The arrested suspects have since been handed over to the police Area Command for further interrogation and investigation.
FAAN commended the swift collaboration among aviation security operatives, military personnel, the police, and other local security groups, including Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes, whose combined efforts led to the arrests.
The authority noted that the incident highlights the need for stronger protection of airport perimeters across the country.
It added that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and with the backing of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is fast-tracking the installation of modern perimeter fencing and improved security infrastructure at airports nationwide.
FAAN further stated that phased work had already commenced to enhance security measures at airports under its management in order to prevent unauthorised access and other security threats.
The agency reassured air travellers and host communities of its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of airport facilities across the country.
