Security operatives in Kenya have apprehended a Nigerian national and a Kenyan over their suspected links to a narcotics distribution network.
The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation carried out by personnel of the Anti-Narcotics Unit in conjunction with the Transnational Organised Crime Unit.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the operation was initiated following credible intelligence suggesting that a drug deal was to take place in Syokimau, Machakos County.
According to the agency, operatives discovered upon getting to the location that the planned transaction had been called off.
The statement further revealed that based on fresh intelligence from undercover sources, the team redirected its operation to Ruaka in Kiambu County, where the suspects were tracked and arrested.
A search conducted at a residence in Mbuti Apartment, Ruaka, led to the recovery of suspected illicit drugs in pellets and packaged forms, as well as digital weighing scales, mobile phones, foreign passports, and cash in both Kenyan and Nigerian currencies.
The suspects were identified as Okeke Ikechukwu, a Nigerian citizen, and Alex Opondo, a Kenyan.
Authorities said the duo had been taken into custody at Ruaraka and Pangani Police Stations for further procedures, while the recovered exhibits had been preserved for forensic analysis.
The agency added that the suspects would be charged in court as investigations continue to identify other members of the syndicate and dismantle the network.
