There was panic late Monday night at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, as suspected gunmen invaded off-campus students’ hostels, forcing occupants to flee for safety.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the assailants, said to be armed, moved from one hostel to another, dispossessing students of valuables including mobile phones, laptops and cash.

A student of the institution, who raised the alarm via a post on X (formerly Twitter), described the incident as part of a recurring security challenge within the area.

In the post shared in the early hours of Tuesday, the student lamented that the attacks had persisted for days, even as students were preparing for examinations.

The student further disclosed that the incident occurred around the Phase 2 axis of the university community, calling for urgent intervention from relevant authorities.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, Abutu Sunday, confirmed the development, stating that one suspect had been apprehended in connection with the attack.

He added that the suspect was currently under investigation, while measures had been put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Meanwhile, students have urged the state government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and intensify patrols around the university environment to safeguard lives and property.
