Residents of the Bukuru Lowcost community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State were on Tuesday gripped by shock following the discovery of a woman’s lifeless body in a river within the area.
It was gathered that the corpse was spotted by locals, who trooped to the riverbank in disbelief as the incident unfolded.
A viral video seen captured residents retrieving the body from the water amid expressions of grief and outrage.
Speaking on the development, a resident, Tina Gabriel, alleged that the victim might have been killed and dumped in the river by unidentified persons.
“This is disturbing. It is hard to imagine that someone could take a life and dispose of the body in our river. I have never witnessed anything like this,” she said.
Another resident, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, condemned the act and called for justice.
“Those behind this must be identified and made to face the law. We cannot allow such a thing to go unpunished,” he said.
He further disclosed that security operatives had been alerted, adding that police officers later arrived at the scene and evacuated the body to a mortuary for further examination.
“As soon as the discovery was made, people gathered at the scene. The police were informed and they came shortly after. The body has been taken away,” he added.
Efforts to get an official reaction from the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, proved abortive as he had yet to respond to enquiries as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the incident comes barely a week after another disturbing discovery in the state, where residents of Special Site in Pankshin Local Government Area raised the alarm over the remains of aborted foetuses found in a polythene bag at a dumpsite.
The remains, believed to be those of male and female foetuses, reportedly sparked outrage among residents, who condemned the act and called for urgent action by authorities.
