Renewed cross-border attacks have struck Russia’s southern Rostov region, leaving one person dead and four others in critical condition, as tensions linked to the ongoing war with Ukraine continue to escalate.
The incident, which involved a combination of drone and missile strikes, occurred in the port city of Taganrog, according to the regional governor, Yuri Slyusar.
Authorities disclosed that the assault led to significant casualties, with emergency responders battling to stabilise the injured victims.
Slyusar further revealed that a missile hit a commercial facility within the area, compounding the destruction recorded during the attack.
In a related development, debris from intercepted drones reportedly struck a foreign-flagged cargo vessel in the Sea of Azov, igniting a fire onboard the ship.
Air defence systems were said to have intercepted multiple drones over Taganrog Bay and surrounding districts, preventing further damage.
While Russian authorities did not officially identify those responsible for the strikes, the development comes amid a pattern of retaliatory attacks by Ukraine on Russian territory, following sustained bombardments by Moscow since the escalation of the conflict in February 2022.
The latest incident also followed deadly Russian strikes in Ukraine a day earlier, which reportedly claimed 14 lives, underscoring the intensifying cycle of violence between both sides.
