A 32-year-old Nigerian, Christian Promise, has died while in police custody in the Rajouri Garden area of West Delhi, India, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Promise, who reportedly travelled to India on a student visa, was arrested on Sunday by a team of police officers for allegedly riding against traffic.
According to police sources, the Nigerian was involved in an accident during the arrest, after his scooter collided with a police motorcycle, causing him to fall and sustain injuries.
He was said to have attempted to escape on foot but fell again before being apprehended by officers.
Police disclosed that the deceased later complained of discomfort while being transported to the Special Staff office, forcing operatives to rush him to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Following the incident, a magistrate court in New Delhi has directed a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of death.
Authorities added that a post-mortem examination would be conducted after obtaining consent from the deceased’s family or the Nigerian diplomatic mission in India.
