A Nigerian-born dancer based in the Republic of Ireland, Tobi Omoteso, is facing possible permanent vision loss following a violent road-rage attack that has sparked outrage and drawn widespread public sympathy.
Omoteso, a popular breaker and hip-hop performer known in his community for youth engagement through dance, was reportedly assaulted on Saturday in Limerick while heading to the Top 8 Street Dance and Hip-hop Festival.
Recounting the incident in an interview with Live95 News, the victim said the attack was triggered after a brief altercation with another motorist over alleged obstruction of traffic.
He admitted responding to an offensive gesture from the driver but said he was subsequently singled out and trailed by the suspect.
According to him, the assailant later intercepted his vehicle, emerged with a bat, and smashed his car windows, causing shards of glass to scatter across his body, including his eyes.
Omoteso said he sustained multiple injuries to his face and hands, with severe damage to one eye after glass fragments penetrated it.
Medical reports indicate that one of his irises was badly lacerated and had to be surgically repaired, while he now faces a series of complex procedures in a bid to restore partial sight.
The dancer disclosed that he has received treatment at St. John’s Hospital and University Hospital Limerick, adding that he may require up to four surgeries as doctors battle to salvage his vision.
He lamented that the injury could have long-term consequences on his career, noting that his eyesight has already been permanently impaired.
In the wake of the incident, a fundraising campaign launched to support his medical expenses has attracted significant donations, exceeding €62,000 as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s national police, the Gardaí, confirmed that an investigation into the attack is ongoing.
A spokesperson for the agency said the incident involved criminal damage to a vehicle and left a man in his 30s with serious injuries.
