Tragedy struck Innayin community in Oyo State on Thursday after a stray elephant reportedly invaded the area, killing one resident and leaving another missing.

The incident, which occurred around 3:30 pm, threw the community into panic as locals raised the alarm over the sudden appearance of the wild animal.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force in the state, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said security operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene following a distress call.

He disclosed that while efforts were ongoing to restore calm, a 50-year-old resident, identified as Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, had been declared missing after reportedly encountering the rampaging elephant.

According to the police, a coordinated search involving operatives, local hunters, and vigilantes is underway to locate the missing victim and contain the animal.

“The command has intensified efforts to secure the area and prevent further casualties,” Olayinka said, urging residents to steer clear of the affected locations and promptly report any sighting of the elephant.

He added that relevant authorities, including the National Park Service, had been contacted to provide technical support in handling the situation in line with wildlife conservation regulations.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Olugbenga, reassured residents that adequate measures were being taken to safeguard lives and property.

He appealed for calm and cooperation, stressing that security agencies were working closely with stakeholders to bring the situation under control.

The police also commended residents for their cooperation and called for sustained collaboration as efforts continue to neutralise the threat.
