The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a motorcyclist Sanni Salisu during an encounter with officers in the Moniya area of Ibadan an incident that triggered unrest and the burning of a police outpost.

The incident which occurred around 11:00am on April 24 2026 reportedly involved two officers attached to the Kara Police Outpost who were said to be conducting an unauthorised stop and search operation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday the command spokesperson Ayanlade Olayinka said the 35 year old rider suddenly developed what appeared to be an epileptic seizure during the interaction and became unresponsive.

He explained that the officers immediately rushed the victim to a hospital in Akinyele where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Olayinka noted that the sudden development sparked tension in the community leading to a violent reaction by some residents who reportedly set a police outpost ablaze.

He added that reinforcements were promptly deployed to the area to restore calm.

According to him the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary in Ring Road Ibadan pending an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The spokesperson further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the state Abimbola Olugbenga had ordered the immediate arrest of the officers involved who are currently in custody.

He said the police chief also directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a comprehensive probe into the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law.

The command warned against the spread of misinformation urging residents to rely on verified sources for updates.

While appealing for calm Olugbenga assured the public that justice would be served and reiterated the command commitment to professionalism protection of lives and property and accountability within the force.
