Tragedy struck in Ikhehe community, Ewato, in Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State, after a 30-year-old man, Pere Odese, was allegedly lynched by an angry mob for reportedly killing his father during a dispute over food.
The deceased father, identified as Friday Odese, was said to have been attacked and killed by his son following an argument at their residence.
Sources in the community disclosed that the incident occurred after Pere allegedly demanded food from his father, who reportedly told him there was none available in the house.
The father, a farmer, was said to have explained that he had been unable to access his farm to harvest cassava because of insecurity and the activities of suspected gunmen operating in nearby forests.
The explanation, however, reportedly angered the son, leading to a heated confrontation between both men.
In the course of the altercation, Pere was alleged to have picked up a cutlass and attacked his father, inflicting fatal injuries on him.
A neighbour who reportedly attempted to rescue the elderly man was also said to have sustained severe machete wounds during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Residents, enraged by the killing, reportedly chased and apprehended the suspect while he was trying to flee the area.
The mob was said to have descended on him and beat him to death before security operatives could intervene.
The incident brought the death toll to two.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikioedem, said the matter had yet to be officially reported at any police station.
