Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged murder of a 33-year-old woman whose body was later discovered in a culvert in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects, identified as Thankgod Ikechukwu Ikwugwara, 26, and Makuochukwu Uzoigwe, 20, were accused of luring the victim to a residence before allegedly killing her and disposing of her body.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday, stating that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department arrested the suspects following extensive intelligence gathering and digital forensic investigations.
According to Ikenga, the case began on March 13, 2026, when the victim’s mother reported her missing at the Oraifite Divisional Police Headquarters.
He explained that a day later, the body of an unidentified woman was discovered inside a culvert near Jesus Bus Stop in Oraifite.
The deceased was subsequently identified by her father as the woman earlier reported missing.
The police spokesman said the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation, leading to the arrest of the suspects on June 6, 2026.
Ikenga revealed that the principal suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation and admitted to orchestrating the crime.
According to the police, the suspect claimed he had maintained a relationship with the deceased for about three years and only later discovered she was married.
He further alleged that after a disagreement with the woman’s husband, he developed a health condition that affected his eyesight and subsequently harboured resentment towards the deceased.
The suspect was said to have invited the woman to his residence under the pretext of seeking assistance over his ailment.
“Upon her arrival, he and the second suspect allegedly attacked her, leading to her death.
They later disposed of the body in a culvert near Jesus Bus Stop, Oraifite, during the early hours of the following day,” the statement said.
The police added that both suspects had confessed to their roles in the incident and would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the investigators for their diligence and professionalism in cracking the case.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of crime and sustaining efforts aimed at tackling criminal activities across the state.
