A delegation of female lawyers under the auspices of Female Lawyers in Politics paid a solidarity visit to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, at the Assembly Complex on Tuesday.

The group, established in 2018, comprises professional female lawyers who mentor and encourage women in the legal profession to pursue political positions.

Speaking during the visit, held in the Speaker’s conference room, the group’s President, Barrister Abimbola Jack-Oladigba, described Meranda’s emergence as a significant milestone.

“We are here to felicitate Madam Speaker. It is a thing of joy and a milestone achievement to have the first female Speaker in our time, and we are glad to witness it. We couldn’t hide our excitement and had to come forward to share our felicitations with the House. Congratulations once again,” Jack-Oladigba said.

Barrister Omowunmi Ogungbaigbe, the group’s Secretary, urged Meranda to surpass the achievements of her predecessors.

“We are here to foster collaboration with your office. Being the first female Speaker in Lagos State, your achievements must supersede those of all your predecessors. We are here behind you. Before you even look back, we are here to serve you. We wish you well in health and wealth,” she stated.

Kehinde Joseph, a lawmaker representing Alimosho Constituency 02, called on women to be vocal in their support of Meranda.

“Women should stand up and speak up for Madam Speaker. Personally, I expected more from the womenfolk. We want to see you speak up for her,” Joseph said.

He added, “We are 36 male members, and we chose her based on her antecedents and achievements. All of us made a resolution that it was either her or no one else.”

In response, Speaker Mojisola Meranda expressed her gratitude for the visit, noting that it gave her immense pleasure to see women showing support and solidarity.

“I know this is going to be the beginning of a wonderful relationship. I can assure you that as you have believed in me, I will not disappoint my gender and Lagos State in general. Thank you so much for your support,” Meranda concluded.
