Akpabio: Women’s Coalition seeks immediate reinstatement of Natasha

A coalition of women’s organizations, under the banner of the Coalition of Women in Governance, has called for the immediate reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP/Kogi Central), condemning her six-month suspension as unjust and undemocratic.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the group’s spokesperson, Zainab Mohammed, criticized the suspension, stating that it violates both parliamentary ethics and judicial authority.

She argued that silencing a duly elected senator not only undermines democracy but also sets a dangerous precedent.

“Our national anthem speaks of building a nation where peace and justice shall reign, yet we are witnessing the suppression of a representative chosen by the people. This is more than an injustice against one woman—it is an assault on democracy, a betrayal of our collective values, and a warning to all Nigerians who dare to challenge the status quo,” Mohammed stated.

She also pointed out that the decision to suspend Akpoti-Uduaghan disregards a court order that had halted any disciplinary action against her, demonstrating what she described as a “blatant disregard for democratic principles.”

Mohammed further noted that the Senate’s internal rules allow a maximum suspension of 14 days, making the six-month penalty not only excessive but also legally questionable.

She warned that targeting women in leadership positions with such actions could discourage female participation in politics and governance.

“If the highest legislative body in the country can openly ignore court orders, what message does that send to ordinary Nigerians?” she asked.

The coalition has urged the Senate to reverse what they termed an “unjust suspension” and restore Akpoti-Uduaghan’s rights, insisting that democratic institutions must uphold the law rather than undermine it.
