Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders condemn escalating attacks on clergymen

Christian leaders in Southern Kaduna have raised concerns over the increasing attacks on clergymen in the region, following the recent abduction and killing of Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu of the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan.

The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association (SKCLA) decried the repeated targeting of religious figures, describing it as a disturbing trend that demands urgent intervention.

In a statement, SKCLA chairman, Apostle Emmanuel Kure, expressed grief over Okechukwu’s death and recalled similar incidents, including the 2022 abduction and murder of Rev. Fr. John Cheitnum and the assassination of Pastor Musa Mairiga of ECWA Church. He questioned whether these persistent attacks were part of a broader scheme against Christian leaders in the area.

“It is heartbreaking and deeply concerning that ministers of the gospel, who dedicate their lives to preaching peace and serving humanity, are being targeted in such a brutal manner. These incidents raise a serious question: Are Christian leaders being deliberately singled out?” Kure stated.

He urged both federal and state security agencies to take decisive measures to end the violence and restore public confidence in safety.

“This disturbing trend must not be allowed to continue. Authorities must act swiftly to ensure that those behind these heinous crimes are brought to justice. If left unchecked, such attacks could fuel religious tensions and threaten the fragile peace in the state,” he warned.

Kure also advised Christian communities and residents of Southern Kaduna to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security operatives to help curb the violence.
