Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have killed five suspected kidnappers said to be terrorizing Ubulu-Uku, Issele-Uku, Issele-Asagba, and nearby areas in Delta State.
The state police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued Sunday in Asaba, the state capital.
According to Edafe, following intelligence reports, officers raided a hideout in the Agu-Amawbia forest in Anambra State, recovering an AK-47 rifle and 132 rounds of live ammunition.
The investigation later led police to another hideout between Issele-Asagba and Otulu, where Bellow Abubakar and his gang members were lying in ambush.
Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire, leading to a fierce gun battle.
The police returned fire, overwhelming the suspects, who fled in different directions with gunshot wounds.
Five of them, including Abubakar, were captured but later died from their injuries in hospital.
Additional recoveries from the scene included two more AK-47 rifles and 18 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
A manhunt for the remaining wounded suspects is currently underway.
