VeryDarkMan set for release today amid public outcry, EFCC yet to file charges
Popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, is expected to be released today, according to a senior official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Monday that Otse remains in custody but has not been formally charged.
Otse was arrested on Friday, May 2, following several petitions accusing him of cyberstalking and related offenses.
His detention has sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians viewing it as an attack on free speech and a move to suppress dissent.
Public anger escalated over the weekend, leading to a protest on Monday in Abuja.
Demonstrators gathered in Wuse, holding signs such as “Free VDM!” and “End Selective Justice!” to demand his immediate release.
Sources close to the commission revealed that formal charges are being prepared and could be filed in court by Thursday.
VeryDarkMan is well known for his outspoken views on politics, corruption, and social issues, often targeting public officials in his commentaries.
The arrest has drawn strong criticism from political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who called it a blatant abuse of power.
As of this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement regarding Otse’s status.
