10th senate introduced 844 bills in two years – Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced on Thursday that the 10th National Assembly has introduced a total of 844 bills in its first two years.
He made the disclosure during a joint session of the National Assembly held in honor of Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day.
The event was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, members of the Progressive Governors Forum, and both current and former lawmakers.
Akpabio noted that, of the 844 bills introduced, 107 are currently undergoing review at the committee level, while 499 have progressed to the second reading stage in the Senate.
He further highlighted the Senate’s work on 26 executive bills aimed at addressing significant national policy issues, along with the receipt of over 100 public petitions from citizens seeking redress and transparency.
“This is a legislative milestone unmatched by any previous Senate in such a short time,” Akpabio stated.
During his speech, the Senate President also suggested the establishment of a June 12 museum to preserve historical records and artifacts related to the 1993 presidential election.
He stressed the importance of unity and collaboration in governance, saying, “When governance is a partnership, progress follows.
But when governance is a contest, the people suffer. Democracy is not a gift—it is a trust we must protect.”
President Tinubu, who had earlier canceled his planned national broadcast, addressed lawmakers directly at the National Assembly to mark Nigeria’s 26th year of uninterrupted democracy.
