Kano orders probe into Commissioner’s alleged role in drug baron’s release

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has ordered a full-scale investigation into the alleged involvement of the state’s Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, in the controversial bail of a suspected drug trafficker, Sulaiman Wawu, also known as Dan Wawu.

The directive follows widespread public concern over reports that the commissioner’s name appeared in official documents allegedly used to facilitate the suspect’s release, raising fears of political interference in a criminal matter.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the state government described the situation as “deeply troubling,” emphasizing that any effort to undermine the state’s anti-drug campaign would be met with strict consequences.

“Let it be known that our administration will not condone any act that compromises the safety and wellbeing of our citizens,” the statement read. “We are fully committed to the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse, and anyone found culpable—regardless of their position—will face the full weight of the law.”

To ensure transparency and accountability, Governor Yusuf has set up a special investigative committee chaired by his Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, Aminu Hussain.

Other members include Hamza Haladu, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar, retired Major General Sani Muhammad, Kabiru Said Dakata, and Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota, who will serve as the panel’s secretary.

The committee has been tasked with uncovering the facts surrounding Wawu’s arrest and subsequent release and is expected to submit its findings without delay.

Wawu, reportedly arrested on charges related to narcotics trafficking, was recently granted bail under suspicious circumstances.

His release has stirred public outrage, especially amid the state’s intensified crackdown on drug abuse and criminal activity—an issue Governor Yusuf has frequently described as a serious threat to Kano’s youth and overall security.

As of press time, Commissioner Namadi has not issued any official response to the allegations.

However, the government’s swift move to initiate an investigation is being seen as an attempt to restore public confidence and demonstrate zero tolerance for abuse of office.
