The Defence Headquarters on Monday disclosed that joint military operations involving Nigerian troops and the United States Africa Command had intensified attacks on terrorist enclaves in the North-East, resulting in the killing of more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters.

According to the military authorities, the latest offensive targeted terrorist hideouts in the Metele axis as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle insurgent networks operating within the region.

Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the coordinated bombardment followed intelligence reports indicating the movement and concentration of terrorists in the area.

He explained that multiple airstrikes were carried out against the insurgents, leading to heavy casualties among the fighters.

Uba noted that the latest operation was a continuation of sustained military offensives that recently led to the elimination of an ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Defence Headquarters said the operation was aimed at weakening terrorist structures, eliminating fighters from the battlefield and preventing insurgents from establishing safe havens anywhere in the country.

“The Defence Headquarters, in close coordination with the United States Africa Command, wishes to inform the public of the continuation of coordinated operations against ISIS militants in North-East Nigeria,” the statement read.

“Following the observed movement and gathering of terrorist elements, multiple airstrikes were conducted in the general area of Metele, resulting in the elimination of over 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters.”

The DHQ stated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remained committed to protecting the nation’s sovereignty and tackling threats posed by terrorist groups across the country.

It added that troops would continue aggressive operations against insurgents and criminal elements threatening national security.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation.

Terrorists who threaten citizens and communities will be identified and defeated,” the statement added.

The military also reiterated its resolve to ensure that no part of the country serves as a refuge for terrorist groups.
