Kwara scholars condemn ritual killing, calls for justice for slain student

Islamic scholars in Kwara State, under the Kwara State Council of Ulama, have urged the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the tragic killing of Miss Hafsoh Lawal, a final-year student of the Kwara State College of Education.

At a press briefing held at the NUJ Press Centre in Ilorin, the council strongly denounced the alleged murder of Hafsoh by Abdulrahman Bello, who is said to be an Islamic cleric and was reportedly involved in ritual activities.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the council’s secretary and retired Grand Khadi of the state’s Shari’a Court of Appeal, Justice Solihu Mohammed, stressed that Islam strictly prohibits the unlawful taking of human life.

“Our faith does not support the shedding of innocent blood for any reason. The killing of this young woman is a serious offense before Allah, who commands us to be just and righteous,” he stated.

Led by the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Mohammad Salihu, the council called on the Kwara State Police Command to conduct a detailed investigation to ensure justice is served.

“We commend the police for their work so far, but we urge them to leave no stone unturned in their investigation. Those responsible for this act must face the full weight of the law to deter others,” Justice Mohammed added.

Expressing sympathy for Hafsoh’s grieving family, the council prayed for divine comfort and urged the authorities to act swiftly in prosecuting those involved.

The Ulama also emphasized that no community should be unfairly labeled due to the actions of a few individuals.

“Kwara State, and particularly Ilorin, is known for its deep-rooted Islamic values, which do not align with ritual practices. Nigerians must resist the urge to generalize or stigmatize communities based on isolated incidents,” the council said.

Addressing concerns about misconduct among some religious leaders, Justice Mohammed revealed that the council had recently shut down two mosques—one for violating community peace and another for engaging in unacceptable practices. He also announced plans to educate young clerics on ethical religious conduct.

The council further praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his efforts in maintaining peace across the state, emphasizing that development can only thrive in a secure and stable environment.
