PDP acting chairman Damagum denies allegations of incompetence, defends ties with Wike
Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, has rejected claims of incompetence and alleged collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to BBC Hausa, Damagum dismissed accusations that he is serving the interests of the APC or acting as its puppet.
He addressed reports suggesting he met with President Bola Tinubu in the UK, saying, “May God be the judge between me and those who accuse me. If I am working for the APC, may God judge us.”
Damagum underscored his long-standing commitment to the PDP, noting he has been a member since 1999 and has never defected.
“Those who dislike me will find a reason to either praise or criticise me, depending on their interests,” he added.
On his relationship with Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a key figure in the APC-led government, Damagum acknowledged their association but denied any misconduct.
“Many of those criticising me have also had dealings with Wike. My only ‘fault’ was not allowing them to handle him the way they wanted,” he said.
He also addressed recent defections from the PDP to the APC, calling them unfortunate but insisting no one left due to mistreatment.
“It’s always painful to lose members, even one person. But none can say they were wronged by the party,” he said.
Acknowledging internal divisions within the PDP, Damagum said disagreements are normal in any political organisation. “The PDP remains united despite internal issues.
Every party faces challenges because it is made up of individuals with different interests,” he stated.
Defending his leadership, Damagum said he follows principles and avoids yielding to personal agendas.
He linked recent criticisms to the aftermath of the party’s election setbacks but reiterated his commitment to leading the PDP with integrity.
