The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, which has claimed at least 21 lives and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
In a statement issued on Friday by its chairman, Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, the forum described the incident as shocking and tragic.
It extended condolences to Governor Umar Bago, the government, and the people of Niger State.
“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum stands in solidarity with Niger State during this difficult time,” AbdulRazaq said.
“We are deeply saddened by the scale of destruction caused by the flood and mourn with the affected families.”
The forum also commended the Niger State Government and emergency responders for their swift efforts in assisting victims.
AbdulRazaq emphasized the need for stronger collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to tackle the growing threat of climate change and improve disaster response.
“This tragic event is yet another reminder of the urgent need to confront the realities of climate change,” he said.
“We urge citizens to support ongoing relief efforts and cooperate with agencies working to provide assistance.”
