The Northern Senators Forum has condemned the recent killing of passengers traveling from Kaduna State, describing the attack as a “barbaric and cowardly act” that poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s unity.

The victims were travelling in an 18-seater bus from Basawa community in Zaria, Kaduna State, to Qua’an Pan Local Government Area in Plateau State when they were ambushed by unknown gunmen.

The attack occurred in the violence-prone Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau on Friday.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

“On behalf of the Forum, I extend our heartfelt sympathies to the people and government of Kaduna State, especially the families affected by this tragic event,” Yar’Adua said.

He described the killings as a violation of the victims’ constitutional right to freedom of movement, stressing that such violence undermines national unity and the principles of a civilised society.

The forum called on the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen intelligence operations to prevent similar attacks and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted.

In addition, the senators urged the Federal Government to equip security agencies with modern communication tools to boost their capacity to prevent crime.

Appealing for calm, the forum also warned against reprisal attacks and encouraged communities in the affected areas to embrace peace.

“We urge the Plateau State Government to intensify efforts to promote peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic and religious groups,” the statement said.

Reaffirming the forum’s commitment to justice and national security, Senator Yar’Adua assured that the group will continue working with relevant authorities to prevent further bloodshed.

“Our thoughts are with the victims’ families. May Almighty Allah grant the departed eternal rest and Jannah,” he concluded.
