A tragic accident struck late Friday night in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, as a trailer lost control and ploughed into pedestrians near Chisco Park Junction, leaving several feared dead.
The crash, which reportedly occurred around 9:30 p.m., was attributed to brake failure.
Witnesses at the scene said the trailer veered off the road and struck people going about their usual evening activities, including petty traders, motorcyclists, and passengers waiting to board vehicles.
Footage from the Amichi City-wide CCTV system showed graphic scenes of the aftermath, with victims lying on the ground while shocked residents and passersby rushed to offer assistance before emergency services arrived.
“It happened so fast,” said one eyewitness, who identified himself as Uche. “People were engaged in their night business, some waiting to board vehicles, when the trailer suddenly came crashing through. Many couldn’t escape. A little girl, some traders, and motorcyclists were among those hit.”
He added that some road users who noticed the vehicle’s erratic approach managed to flee the scene just in time, avoiding the tragic fate that befell others.
Local residents immediately launched rescue efforts as security and emergency personnel arrived at the scene.
When contacted on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the incident but said details were still being compiled.
“We have received reports of the crash, but information about the accident and the casualty figure is still being gathered.
A full statement will be issued soon,” Onabe stated.
As of press time, authorities had yet to release the official number of fatalities, though multiple sources at the scene suggested the death toll could be significant.
