A pregnant woman abducted alongside her daughter by gunmen in Kyaram community, Garga District of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, has reportedly delivered her baby while being held captive, days after her husband was killed during the attack.
The National Secretary of the Kanam Development Association, Shehu Kanam, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists.
According to him, the woman went into premature labour after receiving information that her husband, Umar Rufa’i, had been shot dead by the attackers who invaded their home in the early hours of Sunday.
Kanam said the gunmen stormed the family residence around midnight, killed Rufa’i on the spot and abducted his pregnant wife and their daughter to an undisclosed location.
He added that a few hours after the abduction, relatives of the victims were contacted by the kidnappers, who informed them that the woman had given birth while in captivity.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the brutal killing of Umar Rufa’i at his residence in Kyaram community, Garga area of Kanam Local Government Area, on January 17, 2026,” Kanam said.
“The assailants also abducted his wife and daughter, who remain in captivity.
We condemn this heinous act and extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Kyaram community.”
He noted that Rufa’i was buried on Sunday, January 18, 2026, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Kanam further lamented that the Garga District had continued to suffer repeated attacks, including killings and abductions, stressing that residents now live in fear due to the persistent activities of bandits.
He called on the government and security agencies to urgently step up efforts to curb the rising wave of insecurity in the area and secure the release of those still being held hostage.
