The Abia State Police Command has arrested a young man, Edward Okorie, for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, identified as Sophy Chika, to death during a dispute at their residence in Ohafia, Abia State.
The deceased, a trained nurse said to be from Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area, was reportedly cohabiting with Okorie, an indigene of Ohafia Local Government Area, before the tragic incident.
Sources said the altercation occurred in their shared apartment, though the exact cause of the disagreement had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said she was briefed on the matter by the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia.
According to her, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Umuahia for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
Chinaka stated that the outcome of the investigation would determine the circumstances that led to the nurse’s death.
In a related development, the State Criminal Investigation Department has also launched a probe into a separate incident in Umuahia involving a woman accused of fatally stabbing her husband, Mr Chidiebere James, with a pair of scissors over alleged incriminating messages discovered on his mobile phone.
The police spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing in both cases.
