Suspected armed robbers have shot dead a Point-of-Sale operator in Gboko, the headquarters of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, reportedly left residents of the area in shock and mourning.
Sources in the community said the victim, an unidentified young man, was attending to customers at his POS stand when the attackers suddenly arrived and launched the assault.
During the attack, the assailants reportedly shot the operator before carting away an unspecified amount of money from the business spot.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident happened within a short time, creating panic among people around the area.
“It all happened very quickly. Nobody expected such a violent incident here,” the witness said.
Residents described the deceased as a hardworking youth who had been running the POS business in an effort to earn a legitimate livelihood.
Members of the community also sympathised with the victim’s family, praying for strength and comfort for them in the period of mourning.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for confirmation as of the time this report was filed.
However, sources within the area indicated that security agencies had commenced an investigation into the incident.
