Canada returnee arrested for assaulting KAI official in Lagos
A 52-year-old man, Morufudeen Idowu, who recently returned from Canada, has been arrested in Lagos for allegedly assaulting an official of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as KAI, during an enforcement operation.
The incident occurred along the Ojota corridor, a high-traffic area where LAGESC officers are routinely deployed to prevent unsafe pedestrian practices, including crossing expressways without using designated bridges.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the suspect resisted lawful instructions and physically attacked the officer who tried to stop him from crossing the expressway.
“Mr. Morufudeen Idowu, 52 years old, a Canada returnee, refused arrest and assaulted one of our personnel while crossing the expressway at Ojota,” Wahab stated in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday.
He added that the suspect had been taken into custody at the LAGESC office in Oshodi and would be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of Lagos State.
While the full circumstances surrounding the altercation have yet to be released, the incident underscores the state government’s intensified efforts to curb dangerous road behavior.
LAGESC officers play a critical role in maintaining environmental order, including preventing unlawful pedestrian crossings, street trading, and improper waste disposal.
Crossing expressways without using pedestrian bridges remains illegal in Lagos and has been linked to numerous fatal accidents.
As a result, authorities have increased enforcement in areas like Ojota, Oshodi, and Mile 2 to protect public safety.
