A former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has formally rejoined the All Progressives Congress, marking a significant political shift amid ongoing turmoil within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
Shekarau announced his defection on Sunday at his Kano residence, where supporters gathered as the premises was adorned with APC insignia, signalling his return to the ruling party.
The former governor disclosed that the decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and stakeholders, stressing that the move was a collective resolution.
“We have carefully considered all available options before arriving at this decision,” he told supporters, seeking their endorsement during the announcement.
He defected alongside a former lawmaker, Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, further underscoring cracks within the PDP’s Kano structure.
The development came shortly after Shekarau tendered his resignation from the PDP in a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to his ward chairman in Giginyu, Nassarawa Local Government Area. In the correspondence, he stated that his exit from the party takes immediate effect, while expressing appreciation to grassroots leaders for their support during his membership.
Copies of the resignation were also forwarded to the party’s leadership at the local government and state levels, indicating a formal and coordinated withdrawal from the opposition platform.
Shekarau’s return to the APC follows months of speculation linked to the PDP’s lingering internal disputes.
The former governor had earlier hinted at his possible exit, describing the opposition party as weakened by persistent crises.
Political observers note that his recent engagements with key figures, including President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, may have influenced the decision.
Shekarau, who governed Kano State between 2003 and 2011 under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, is no stranger to party realignments, having moved across major political platforms over the years.
His latest defection is expected to reshape political calculations in Kano, a key battleground state, as parties begin early positioning ahead of future elections.
